Asia in Summer: Heat and Humidity

Heat and high humidity call for light textures, oil control and strong SPF. A look at the kit for a summer trip to Asia and evening cleansing after a sticky day.

Notela Editorial

Summer in much of Asia means heat and high humidity. Skin sweats, shines, and rich creams feel sticky. Closer to the equator the sun is stronger, too. So you take light textures, strong SPF and thorough evening cleansing.

In short

In a hot, humid climate the base is a light gel-cream, strong SPF and good evening cleansing. Closer to the equator the sun is stronger, so SPF generously and with top-ups. Rich creams are often unnecessary humidity itself slows moisture loss. In the evening, double cleanse to remove SPF, sweat and sebum.

01Heat, humidity and textures

In high humidity water evaporates from the skin more slowly, and rich creams feel sticky. Light gel-creams are more comfortable, and the humid air itself takes on part of the hydration. Skin still sweats and shines, so blotting papers and light textures come in handy. See creams and hydration.

  • A light gel-cream instead of a rich one.
  • SPF generously and with top-ups: the sun is stronger near the equator.
  • Blotting papers and light textures for shine.
  • Lip balm; water with you in the heat.

02Evening cleansing

A sticky hot day leaves SPF, sweat, sebum and city dust on the skin. In the evening a double cleanse helps: first an oil-based product removes SPF and oil, then a gentle gel. This lowers the risk of congested pores in the heat. More in double cleansing.

03Common mistakes

  • A rich cream in humid heat. Sticky and can congest pores.
  • Too little SPF near the equator. The sun is stronger generous protection and top-ups are needed.
  • Skipping evening cleansing. A day's SPF and sebum are best washed off thoroughly.
  • Drying the skin to fight shine. Sebum only increases in response.

04Common questions

Do I need a rich cream in a humid climate?

Often not. High humidity itself slows moisture loss, and a rich cream feels sticky. A light gel-cream is more comfortable.

Why do I need more SPF near the equator?

Closer to the equator the sun's rays travel a shorter path through the atmosphere, so UV is stronger. Apply protection generously and reapply.
