Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is one of the most versatile and, at the same time, gentlest actives. Its strength is that it does two things at once: it reduces sebum production and strengthens the barrier. That is why it suits both oily and sensitive skin.
Niacinamide reduces sebum production and at the same time strengthens the barrier (by stimulating ceramide synthesis), plus it calms and evens the tone. The working concentration is 2–5%; higher does not mean better. It is well tolerated. The myth of incompatibility with vitamin C is out of date.
01What niacinamide does
Niacinamide is a "corrective" active, not a quick fix. Clinical data show that it reduces sebum production (which is why it is useful for oily skin and acne) while supporting the barrier by stimulating the synthesis of ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol — the very lipids the barrier is made of.
In addition, it works as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, calms redness and helps even out the tone by reducing the transfer of melanin. Hence its benefit for oily skin, visible pores and a weakened barrier.
02Concentration: 2–5%
The working range is about 2–5%. Higher percentages do not give proportionally more benefit, but they more often cause stinging and redness on sensitive skin. Niacinamide does not change the skin's pH, does not thin the epidermis and does not increase light sensitivity, so it suits both morning and evening.
03The vitamin C myth
"Niacinamide cannot be used with vitamin C — they neutralise each other" is an out-of-date claim. It grew out of old laboratory experiments with niacin (not niacinamide) under heat — conditions far removed from real skincare. In modern formulas, niacinamide and vitamin C combine happily, and niacinamide even reduces the irritation from other actives.
04Common questions
When to apply — morning or evening?
Any time. Niacinamide is stable, does not increase sensitivity to the sun and pairs well with other products, so it works in both morning and evening routines.
Will niacinamide help with a greasy sheen?
Over time, yes. With regular use it reduces sebum production and calms the skin, but this is a cumulative effect, not an instant mattifying one.
