A damaged barrier is repaired not with a stack of new products but with a logic: calm → replenish lipids → seal. First you settle the inflammation and redness, then restore ceramides along with cholesterol and fatty acids, and finally hold in moisture. We have gathered six popular products (four Korean and two Western) and arranged them not only by skin type but by their role in this sequence. The theory of barrier repair is covered in a separate article; here we compare the products.
In brief: to calm — SKIN1004 Probio-Cica or La Roche-Posay Cicaplast. To replenish lipids — creams with ceramides: COSRX The Ceramide, Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin or the budget-friendly CeraVe. For a light texture — Probio-Cica and Dr.Jart+; for something richer and for very dry skin — Cicaplast and CeraVe. The guiding principle: fewer actives, more lipids.
01How to read this comparison
The barrier is a "brick wall": the cells are the bricks, held together by a lipid mortar between them (ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids in roughly a 3:1:1 ratio). When the mortar runs short, the skin loses moisture and becomes irritated. So the products divide by role: soothing ones (centella, panthenol — they settle redness), lipid-replenishing ones (ceramides + cholesterol + fatty acids) and sealing ones (occlusives that hold in moisture). Good repair usually combines the first two roles.
02The Korean options — four of them
SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Probio-Cica Intense Ampoule (soothing + lipids). An ampoule built on fermented centella (Lactobacillus probiotics) with ceramide NP, phytosterols and fatty acids in a 3:1:1 ratio. It calms the skin and supports the barrier at once. A milky but light texture without stickiness that absorbs instantly. It suits dry, normal and combination skin, and works well as a first step after toner. From our editorial team's own experience: very light, absorbs quickly, not sticky, and sits beautifully under actives.
COSRX The Ceramide Skin Barrier Moisturizer (lipid replenishment). A cream with ceramides and hyaluronic acid that restores the barrier and holds in moisture. It suits dry and normal skin as a main repair step. A strong reputation in the barrier-cream category.
Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin Cream (lipid replenishment, light). One of the best-known ceramide creams: five types of ceramide and cholesterol, yet a relatively light texture. Good for dry and sensitive skin that needs a barrier cream without heaviness. It contains fragrance — worth noting for reactive skin.
COSRX Balancium Comfort Ceramide Cream (soothing + lipids). A cream built on centella (Centella Asiatica) with ceramide NP, niacinamide and panthenol — it combines soothing with lipid replenishment. It suits sensitive and redness-prone skin. Denser than the ampoule, it works as an evening step.
03The Western options — two of them
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 (soothing, repairing). A multipurpose balm with panthenol (5%) for irritated, dry and cracked skin. A dense, almost ointment-like texture that seals and repairs well. For very dry and damaged skin, used on specific areas or in a thin layer.
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream (lipid replenishment, budget-friendly). A cream with three ceramides, hyaluronic acid and cholesterol, and free of fragrance. Approved for sensitive and eczema-prone skin. A rich formula for dry and very dry skin. Affordable and dermatologist-recommended.
- Flooding a damaged barrier with new actives. The barrier is repaired by cutting back and adding lipids, not by adding serums.
- Reaching only for a soothing product and waiting for repair. Centella settles redness, but lipids (ceramides) need to follow.
- Ignoring fragrance on reactive skin. Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin and Cicaplast contain it — with marked reactivity, choose fragrance-free options (CeraVe, SKIN1004).
- Expecting results within a couple of days. Barrier repair usually takes two to six weeks of consistent, gentle care.

05Common questions
Where do I start with a damaged barrier?
By paring back your routine: drop acids, retinol and scrubs for two to four weeks. Then calm the skin (centella, panthenol — SKIN1004 Probio-Cica or Cicaplast) and replenish lipids with a ceramide cream (COSRX, Dr.Jart+, CeraVe).
Is a single centella ampoule enough?
Usually not. An ampoule such as SKIN1004 Probio-Cica calms and provides some lipids, but a markedly damaged barrier also needs a ceramide cream on top, as the main repair step.
What should sensitive skin choose regarding fragrance?
Avoid fragrance: CeraVe and SKIN1004 Probio-Cica are free of it. Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin and La Roche-Posay Cicaplast contain fragrance — with marked reactivity, it is better to go without.
