The main myth about acne is that it is "dirty skin" that needs scrubbing harder. In fact, harsh cleansing and drying out make acne worse. The working approach is duller and more effective: a gentle base, one active ingredient at a time, and patience.
Acne is not dirt but a combination of congested pores, sebum, bacteria and inflammation. What to do: cleanse gently (no more than twice a day), do not rub or squeeze, introduce one active (BHA, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene or azelaic acid) and give it six to eight weeks. Actives + sun = you need a non-comedogenic sunscreen.
01Acne is not about dirt
Breakouts appear when a pore becomes congested with sebum and dead cells, and bacteria and inflammation join in. So "scrubbing harder" does not work: frequent washing and scrubs irritate the skin and provoke new breakouts. Dermatologists advise gentle cleansing no more than twice a day and products marked "alcohol-free".
02The foundation of acne care
The foundation is the same as for everyone: gentle cleansing, hydration, sunscreen. Avoid harsh toners and alcohol exfoliants — they dry the skin and worsen breakouts. Even oily, acne-prone skin needs a cream: oily skin.
- Cleanse. A gentle product, alcohol-free.
- Hydrate. A light oil-free cream.
- Sunscreen SPF 30+. Non-comedogenic is essential — especially with actives.
- Cleanse. Remove sunscreen and sebum.
- One active. BHA, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene or azelaic acid — just one.
- Hydrate. Soothe and seal.
One active at a time. Several at once = irritation, and it is unclear what helped and what harmed.
03Actives: one at a time
Choose one ingredient for your type of breakout and use it for six to eight weeks. Full improvement takes three to four months — this is normal.
More on two gentle options: salicylic acid (cleans pores) and azelaic acid (acne + redness + marks).
04Common mistakes
- Squeezing. Prolongs healing and raises the risk of scars and dark marks (PIH).
- Drying the skin with alcohol and astringents. Acne-prone skin is oily, but over-drying makes it worse.
- Changing product every week. An active needs six to eight weeks.
- Washing several times a day. Irritates and provokes new breakouts.
- Treating only the visible spots. The active is applied to the whole area, to prevent new ones.
05When to see a dermatologist
If the breakouts are deep and painful, leave scars or dark marks, or there is no improvement over several months — it is worth seeing a doctor. Over-the-counter products do not always cope with inflammatory acne, and early treatment reduces the risk of scarring.
06Common questions
Does toothpaste help with spots?
No. Toothpaste contains abrasives and fragrances that irritate the skin. Use proven actives: salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene.
Does acne-prone skin need moisturising?
Yes. Many actives dry the skin, so a light oil-free cream is essential — otherwise irritation and flaking increase.
