A cream seems the simplest step, but it is here that it is decided whether the skin will hold moisture. Good hydration is not "greasiness" but a balance of three types of ingredient. And yes, even oily skin needs a cream. Let us work out how to choose the texture for yourself.
Hydration rests on three types of ingredient: humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin — draw in water), emollients (soften) and occlusives (seal in moisture). "Oily skin does not need cream" is a myth. The texture is matched to skin type: a gel for oily, a rich cream for dry.
01Three types of ingredient
- Humectants — draw water into the skin: hyaluronic acid, glycerin, beta-glucan, panthenol.
- Emollients — soften and even out the surface: squalane, fatty alcohols, oils.
- Occlusives — seal in moisture, slowing evaporation: ceramides, squalane, dimethicone, oils and butters.
A good cream combines all three. A humectant without sealing, in dry air, can on the contrary dry the skin — so humectants are always "locked in" with an emollient or occlusive. Apply cream to slightly damp skin, so there is something to hold.
02Texture by skin type
The formula matters more than the format, but the texture decides comfort. For oily skin — a light gel or oil-free gel cream. For dry — a rich cream or butter with occlusives. For sensitive — a fragrance-free barrier cream. Oily skin needs hydration: without it the skin compensates for the lack of moisture by increasing sebum.
03Common mistakes
- Skipping cream on oily skin. Increases sebum production.
- Only hyaluronic acid without sealing. In dry air it can dry the skin.
- A rich, comedogenic cream on oily skin. Look for oil-free / non-comedogenic.
- A fragranced cream on sensitive skin. Fragrance is a common trigger.

05Common questions
Does oily skin definitely need cream?
Yes. Without hydration the skin compensates for the lack of moisture by increasing sebum. It needs a light oil-free gel cream, not the refusal of hydration.
Can I get by with hyaluronic acid alone?
Not in dry air. Hyaluronic acid draws in water, but without a sealing layer the moisture evaporates. You need a cream over it.
