The essence is a signature step of Korean skincare: a light hydrating layer between toner and serum. It does not replace actives, but it saturates the skin with moisture and prepares it for what follows, adding radiance and softness. Essences serve different concerns — basic hydration, repair, radiance, support for mature skin. We have gathered six popular essences — by concern — and set out what each one does and whom it suits.
In brief, by concern: for basic hydration and the barrier — mucin and fermented formulas (COSRX Snail 96, Missha Time Revolution). For radiance and even tone — rice and niacinamide (Beauty of Joseon Ginseng, rice essences). For repair and firmness — PDRN and peptides (VT PDRN, mature-skin essences). Apply after toner, before serum, pressing it in with the palms. An essence complements a routine; it does not replace a serum with actives.
01First — what an essence is and what it is for
Strictly speaking, essence, serum and ampoule are relatives: concentrates for the skin. Historically the essence is the lightest and most watery of them, and its job is not to "treat" but to hydrate and prepare the skin for actives. In a routine it comes after toner and before serum. It is applied to the palms and pressed into the skin rather than spread. If your skin is oily, choose light, watery essences; if dry, richer ones with mucin or oils. Identify the concern — hydration, radiance or repair — and the choice among the six below becomes simple.
02Hydration and the barrier
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence. One of the best-known essences in the world: 96% snail mucin filtrate hydrates, supports the barrier, smooths texture and helps with post-acne marks. A slightly tacky texture. For most skin types, including sensitive and dehydrated skin.
Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence. A fermented essence (in the spirit of a "first step" in the routine) — it hydrates, evens the skin and lends it smoothness and a soft radiance. Watery and readily absorbed. For dull, dehydrated and normal skin. Applied right after cleansing.
03Radiance and even tone
Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water. A light essence built on ginseng extract and niacinamide — it hydrates, lends freshness and a healthy radiance, and supports an even tone. Not at all heavy, and fine under make-up. For dull, normal and combination skin.
A rice essence (for example I'm From Rice Toner/Essence). Essences built on rice water and extracts lend a soft radiance and nourishment, and even out the tone of tired skin. A pleasant, light texture. For dull and dehydrated skin after a "glow" without oiliness.
04Repair and firmness
VT PDRN Essence 100. An essence with PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotides) — an ingredient associated with repair and with supporting the skin's firmness. A fluid, emulsion-like texture that feels rich. For tired and mature skin that needs barrier and firmness support. From our editorial team's own experience: the texture is pleasant, but on combination skin it can leave a slight oily sheen and tackiness, so it sits better in the evening, after a thorough cleanse. Under make-up in the morning, it is a matter of taste.
A peptide essence (mature-skin care). Essences with peptides gently support firmness and work as a mild alternative to actives for anyone not yet suited to retinol. They pair well with hydrating layers. For early signs of ageing and sensitive skin.
- Expecting an essence to do a serum's work. An essence primarily hydrates and prepares the skin; pronounced concerns (acne, pigmentation, wrinkles) are addressed by actives in a serum.
- Applying it to dry skin in a thick, overlapping layer. An essence is pressed thinly into skin still slightly damp from toner — that way it works better and does not pill.
- Getting the order wrong. An essence comes after toner and before serum; swap it with a rich cream and it will not absorb.
- Choosing a tacky essence for oily skin. Dense mucin textures can feel sticky on combination and oily skin — for those, watery options and evening application are better.
- Expecting an instant effect. Hydration shows quickly, but even tone and firmness are the result of weeks of consistent care, not a single use.

06Common questions
How does an essence differ from a toner and a serum?
A toner restores pH and gives light hydration right after cleansing; an essence is a more concentrated hydrating layer; a serum carries actives for a specific concern. The order: toner → essence → serum.
Do I need an essence if I already have a toner and a serum?
Not essential — it is an extra layer of hydration and comfort. Dry and dehydrated skin gains a noticeable benefit; for oily skin a light toner and a serum are enough if you would rather keep things simple.
What is PDRN in essences?
PDRN — polydeoxyribonucleotides, an ingredient associated with repair and firmness. In cosmetics it is a popular "anti-ageing" ingredient; keep expectations realistic — this is skincare, not a medical procedure.
How much essence should I apply?
A little — a few drops or one or two spritzes into the palms, then pressed into the face. A thick layer is not absorbed and can pill under the products that follow.
