A serum is a concentrate of active ingredients between toner and cream. The key question is not "which is best" but which concern you are addressing: hydration, brightening, antioxidant defence, acne and pores, or anti-ageing. We have gathered ten popular serums — one for each aim, mixing Korean and Western — and set out what each one does and whom it suits.
In brief, by concern: for hydration — Torriden DIVE-IN or COSRX Snail 96. For brightening and even tone — Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep (rice + arbutin) or vitamin C. For antioxidant care in the morning — vitamin C or idebenone (Mary&May). For acne, pores and oiliness — niacinamide: COSRX Niacinamide 15 (strong) or The Ordinary 10% (budget-friendly). For anti-ageing — retinal (KSECRET) / retinol or peptides. A layering rule: from thin to rich, no more than two or three serums at a time, and vitamin C and retinol on different days.
01First — which concern
Serums, essences and ampoules are functionally almost the same thing — concentrates of actives; the difference in the names is historical. What matters is this: for a single concern you use one or two products, not everything at once. Hydration — hyaluronic acid, snail mucin. Brightening — arbutin, vitamin C, niacinamide. Antioxidant defence — vitamin C, idebenone. Acne and pores — niacinamide with zinc, tea tree. Anti-ageing — retinal/retinol, peptides. Identify the aim, and the choice among the ten below becomes simple.
02Hydration
Torriden DIVE-IN Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid. A light serum with hyaluronic acid across five molecular weights — it hydrates at different depths without weighing the skin down. It absorbs quickly and suits all skin types, dehydrated and oily skin especially. A noticeable plumping effect usually within three to seven days.
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence. One of the best-known essences, with 96% snail mucin filtrate — it hydrates, supports the barrier and smooths texture, and helps with post-acne marks. A slightly tacky texture. It suits most skin types, including sensitive skin, and is well tolerated.
03Brightening, even tone and antioxidants
Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum: Rice + Alpha Arbutin. It was this serum that made the brand globally known: rice water lends radiance and hydration, while 2% alpha-arbutin brightens gently, without the instability of pure vitamin C. A watery texture that absorbs almost instantly. For dull skin, post-acne marks and slight unevenness of tone.
Vitamin C (Western, for example Paula's Choice C15 or The Ordinary). Vitamin C is an antioxidant, it brightens, protects against free radicals and supports collagen production. Apply it in the morning, always under sunscreen. It suits dull skin and pigmentation; sensitive skin does better to start with low concentrations and stable forms. Do not combine it in one layer with a high-strength niacinamide.
Mary&May Idebenone + Blackberry Complex Serum. Idebenone is a potent antioxidant, a relative of coenzyme Q10: it protects against free radicals and supports even tone and radiance. Apply it in the morning, under your care and sunscreen — as an alternative or complement to vitamin C for anyone who finds pure vitamin C harsh. For dull skin and the prevention of photoageing. From our editorial team's own experience: we apply it in the morning before cream, sunscreen and make-up; it mattifies slightly and leaves a velvety feel rather than a sheen — convenient under foundation. A calm antioxidant step for every day.
04Acne, pores, oiliness
COSRX Niacinamide 15 (strong). A high concentration of niacinamide (15%) plus zinc PCA — it regulates sebum, refines the pores and brightens post-acne marks. For oily and acne-prone skin, in those already accustomed to niacinamide. For newcomers and sensitive skin, 15% may be too much.
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% (budget-friendly). One of the most affordable and best-known serums: 10% niacinamide and 1% zinc — they control oiliness, smooth texture and reduce the appearance of pores. For oily, combination and acne-prone skin. It can feel slightly tacky; very sensitive skin should introduce it carefully.
05Anti-ageing
Retinal / retinol (for example Beauty of Joseon Retinal or COSRX Retinol 0.5). Vitamin A is the most studied anti-ageing active: it smooths wrinkles, evens texture and speeds up skin renewal. Introduce it gradually, in the evening, from a low concentration, always with sunscreen by day. For mature skin and prevention. Reactive skin — with caution, and not combined with acids on the same evening.
KSECRET Seoul 1988 Retinal Liposome 2% + Black Ginseng. Retinal in a liposomal shell — a form of vitamin A that acts more actively than retinol, but is tolerated more gently thanks to the encapsulation. 2% is a notable concentration, so this is a product for skin already accustomed to vitamin A derivatives. In the evening only, always with sunscreen by day. From our editorial team's own experience: the texture is light, it does not sting or cause redness, and it does not clog the pores — but it works as a full-strength retinal, so barrier care before and after matters (a soothing toner, a rich cream). We use it at night only.
A peptide serum (for example The Ordinary Multi-Peptide). Peptides support collagen production and firmness — a gentler alternative to retinol, suited to sensitive skin too. It pairs well with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. For early signs of ageing and anyone not yet suited to retinol.
- Applying five serums at once. Two or three at a time is enough, from thin texture to rich. Otherwise the skin does not absorb them and becomes irritated.
- Combining vitamin C and a high-strength niacinamide in one layer. At high concentrations they can reduce each other's effect; better at different times of day.
- Mixing retinol and acids on the same evening. This overloads the skin — alternate them on different days.
- Expecting brightening without sunscreen. Ultraviolet undoes any work on tone and pigmentation.
- Giving up after a week. Hydration shows within days, but brightening and anti-ageing take six to eight weeks of consistent use.

07Common questions
What is the difference between a serum, an essence and an ampoule?
Functionally, almost nothing — all three are concentrates of actives between toner and cream. Historically, essences were more watery and ampoules more concentrated, but modern formulas do not keep to those boundaries.
How many serums can I apply at once?
Usually two or three, from the lightest texture to the richest. In the morning it is convenient to combine a hydrating and an antioxidant one, in the evening a repairing and a hydrating one. Vitamin C and retinol are not mixed in one layer.
How does idebenone differ from vitamin C?
Both are antioxidants for morning care. Idebenone (a relative of coenzyme Q10) is usually more stable and gentler than pure vitamin C, less likely to cause irritation and does not need such strict protection from light. Vitamin C, though, brightens more strongly. You can use them in turn or alternate them on different days.
Where should a beginner start?
With the concern. If the skin is dehydrated — hyaluronic acid (Torriden) or mucin (COSRX). If dull — Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep. If oily with pores — niacinamide (The Ordinary as a budget start). Anti-ageing and retinal are introduced later, on a settled routine and with barrier care.
