Puffiness and Bags Under the Eyes: Causes and What Helps

Morning puffiness and permanent "bags" are different things with different solutions. A look at what depends on sleep, salt and allergy, and what on age and anatomy, and what really reduces the swelling.

K·Beauty Guide Editorial

It is important to distinguish two different phenomena. Puffiness is temporary swelling from fluid (sleep, salt, allergy); it comes and goes. Bags are a more permanent bulge from the age-related weakening of tissues and the shifting of fat pads. The first responds well to habits and care, the second — mainly to procedures.

Коротко

Morning puffiness is fluid: it is worsened by lack of sleep, salty food at night, alcohol, allergy and sleeping face-down in the pillow. Helped by cold, caffeine, sleeping on the back with the head raised, less salt, allergy control. Permanent bags are the age-related weakening of tissues and shifting of fat; care barely removes them, here procedures decide (laser, fillers, blepharoplasty).

01Puffiness or bags — they are different

Puffiness changes through the day: stronger in the morning, subsiding by midday, depending on how you slept and what you ate. Bags are stable and noticeable in any light — a consequence of the skin and ligaments weakening with age while the fat pads under the eye "bulge out". A quick guide: if the swelling comes and goes — we work with fluid; if it is permanent and independent of routine — it is structure.

02What worsens puffiness

The main triggers of fluid puffiness: lack of sleep and poor sleep, salty food at night (water retention), alcohol and dehydration, allergy and a blocked nose (inflammation and congestion), sleeping face-down, and irritation from cosmetics. Hormonal fluctuations and heat also contribute. The good news: almost all of these factors are manageable.

03What really reduces the swelling

Against puffiness the simple works: cold in the morning (chilled spoons, a compress, a roller from the fridge) constricts vessels and reduces swelling; caffeine gels give a temporary toning effect; 7–8 hours of sleep on the back with the head slightly raised; less salt and alcohol in the evening; treating allergy. Against bags care is largely powerless — discuss laser resurfacing, fillers or blepharoplasty with a doctor.

  • Confusing puffiness and bags. A "bag" cream will not remove age-related structure.
  • Massaging the area aggressively. The thin skin is easily stretched and injured.
  • Using haemorrhoid ointments under the eyes. A folk hack that easily irritates the delicate skin and is dangerous close to the eyes.
  • Ignoring allergy. Chronic congestion and itching give persistent puffiness and rubbing.
  • A salty dinner + little water. The classic of morning swelling.

05Common questions

Why are my eyes puffy in the morning but not by evening?

This is fluid puffiness: at night fluid redistributes, especially with face-down sleep, lack of sleep or a salty dinner. In the upright position through the day it drains away.

Will a cream remove bags under the eyes?

Permanent bags are a weakening of tissues and shifting of fat. Care can slightly improve the skin's appearance, but the bulge itself is removed by procedures at a doctor.

Does drinking less water before bed help?

On the contrary: dehydration provokes fluid retention. Better to reduce salt and alcohol in the evening, and drink water through the day.
