Post-Acne: Red and Dark Marks

Marks left by spots come in different forms: red marks and dark marks are different mechanisms, and they need different products. And scars are a separate story. A look at how to tell them apart and what to do with each.

K·Beauty Guide Editorial

"Post-acne" is a catch-all word that hides three different things: red marks, dark marks and scars. They have different mechanisms, and treating them the same way is a mistake. First, let us work out which one you have.

Коротко

Red marks (PIE) are a vascular trace; they pass on their own, helped by soothing ingredients, niacinamide, azelaic acid and sunscreen. Dark marks (PIH) are melanin; they need tyrosinase inhibitors and, essentially, sunscreen. Scars are texture; they cannot be removed with home care. And above all: do not squeeze.

01Three different things

Red and dark marks are confused most often, but the approach to them differs. Scars (indented or raised) are already a change of texture, and they require procedures from a doctor, not creams.

A simple guidePress gently on the mark with a clear ruler or glass: if it blanches — it is vascular redness (PIE). If the colour does not change — it is melanin (PIH).

02What to do with each

  • Red marksniacinamide, azelaic acid, soothing ingredients, sunscreen. Time heals.
  • Dark marks → tyrosinase inhibitors (azelaic acid, vitamin C, arbutin) and, essentially, sunscreen: pigmentation spots.
  • Scars → to a dermatologist (lasers, microneedling, peels); home care will not remove them.
  • Both → first bring the acne itself under control, otherwise the marks will keep appearing.

03Common mistakes

  • Squeezing spots. The main cause of both red and dark marks.
  • Aggressively brightening red marks. They are not about melanin — acids do not help here, they irritate.
  • Forgetting sunscreen. Without it, dark marks do not fade.
  • Expecting scars to disappear with cream. Only procedures change texture.

04Common questions

Are red marks forever?

Usually not. Vascular redness (PIE) most often fades on its own over several months. Niacinamide, azelaic acid, gentle care and sun protection help speed it up.

How to remove dark marks faster?

With a combination of a tyrosinase inhibitor (azelaic acid, vitamin C, arbutin) and daily sunscreen. Faster does not mean harsher: irritation produces new dark marks.
