About split ends there is a hard truth: you cannot "seal" them for good. Products marked "split-end repair" only temporarily glue the scales together. But slowing the appearance of new ones is quite realistic. Let us work out why the ends specifically split and what helps.
The ends split first — they are the oldest and have endured the most heat, chemistry and friction. A split hair cannot be fused: "sealing" products smooth the scales temporarily, until washing. What really works: regular trimming of the ends + prevention (heat protection, a hydrating and leave-in conditioner, gentle combing). If splitting is grown out, it creeps up the shaft.
01Why the ends specifically split
The ends are the oldest part of the hair: they have been subjected the longest to washing, combing, heat, colouring and friction against clothing. Over time the protective cuticle on the ends wears away, the shaft is exposed and splits into a "fork". The process is accelerated by dryness, the absence of conditioner, tight elastics, a rough towel. The longer the hair, the older the ends — so long hair splits more noticeably.
02The only way to remove them
A split end cannot be glued back together — hair is non-living and does not heal. "Split-end" products temporarily smooth and glue the scales with silicones and oils, improving the look until the next wash, but do not restore the structure. The only way to genuinely remove splitting is to trim the ends. If this is not done, the splitting gradually rises higher up the shaft, and you will have to cut more.
03How to slow the appearance
Preventing splitting = preventing damage to the ends. What helps: a hydrating conditioner after every wash and a leave-in conditioner/detangler (they reduce breakage and splitting), oil on the ends, heat protection and less heat, gentle combing with a comb from the ends upwards, soft metal-free elastics, patting (not rubbing) the hair. A regular small trim of the ends keeps splitting under control.
- Believing in "sealing forever". The effect of silicones lasts until washing.
- Growing out length over splitting. The splitting creeps up — then you cut more.
- Skipping conditioner. Dry ends split faster.
- Combing from the roots with force. Pulls and breaks the vulnerable ends.
- Cutting splitting with ordinary blunt scissors at home. A ragged cut provokes new splitting.

05Common questions
Can split ends be restored without cutting?
No. A split hair does not fuse. Products temporarily glue the scales and improve the look, but splitting can only be removed by trimming the ends.
How often to trim the ends?
There is no single rule — go by the state of the ends. A regular small trim (as splitting appears) keeps the problem in check, so you do not have to cut a lot.
Do vitamins help with split ends?
Nutrition affects the new hair at the root, but will not "repair" already-damaged ends. Splitting is about mechanics and care along the length, not about supplements.
