Why Sunscreen Is Needed and How to Choose It

Sunscreen is not a beach thing but a daily base and the most effective anti-ageing step. What the three words on the label mean, how much to apply and why "it doesn't work" usually means "you applied too little".

K·Beauty Guide Editorial

Sunscreen is most often seen as a "beach cream". That is the main mistake: ultraviolet damages the skin all year round, and it is daily protection, not expensive serums, that gives the most noticeable anti-ageing effect.

Коротко

Sunscreen is a daily base, not a beach thing. UV rays speed up ageing and raise the risk of skin cancer even on cloudy days. Choose broad-spectrum, SPF 30+, water-resistant. And above all — apply enough (for the face the AAD advises at least ~1 tsp) and every morning.

01Why every day

Even on an overcast day up to 80% of ultraviolet passes through the clouds. UV damage accumulates and is responsible for most of the visible photoageing — wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of firmness. So sunscreen is the most effective anti-ageing step, more important than any serum.

02How to choose: three words on the label

  • Broad-spectrum — protection against both UVA and UVB.
  • SPF 30 or higher — blocks about 97% of UVB rays.
  • Water-resistant — holds for 40 or 80 minutes on damp skin.

Chemical and mineral (with zinc oxide / titanium dioxide) — both work; mineral is often recommended for sensitive skin. By texture: a cream is handier for dry skin and the face, a gel — for oily.

03How much to apply and when

For the face the AAD recommends at least about 1 teaspoon — roughly as much as fits along the index and middle fingers. Apply about 15 minutes before heading out. Most people apply only 25–50% of the needed amount — hence the feeling that "sunscreen doesn't work". Outdoors, reapply every 2 hours and after water or sweat.

04Common questions

Do I need sunscreen indoors and in winter?

UVA rays pass through clouds and window glass, and damage accumulates all year round. For an ordinary city day it makes sense to apply sunscreen in the morning; for a whole day by a window away from direct sun — as the situation requires.

Is SPF 50 much better than 30?

The difference in blocking UVB between 30 and 50 is small. What matters far more is that the product is broad-spectrum and that you apply it in sufficient amount and regularly. A high SPF partly compensates for under-application, but does not cancel the two-hour rule.
