Dry Body Skin: Why It Feels Tight and How to Fix It

Body dryness (xerosis) most often comes from a hot shower, fragrances and dry air, not from a "lack of water inside". A look at what really hydrates the skin of the body and in what order to apply everything.

K·Beauty Guide Editorial

Tightness, flaking and itching on the shins and forearms is xerosis, dryness of the body's skin. The usual mistake is to "drink more water and apply something greasier". In fact the point is more often that the skin loses moisture faster than it holds it: a hot shower, harsh gels, dry air. We fix the cause, not the consequence.

Коротко

Body dryness arises when the barrier is disturbed and the skin does not hold moisture: a hot shower, fragrances, harsh flannels, dry air, age. The solution: a warm short shower, a gentle cleansing gel, hydration on damp skin right after the shower (a cream/ointment with ceramides, glycerin, urea), a humidifier in winter. Improvement usually in 2 weeks; if not — see a doctor (dermatitis/psoriasis possible).

01Why the skin of the body gets dry

The body has areas with few sebaceous glands — the shins, forearms — and they find it harder to hold moisture. The barrier is weakened by hot water and harsh gels (they wash off lipids), dry air (heating, air conditioning), fragrances and alcohol in products, and by age. Xerosis occurs in most older people. The result: water leaves the skin faster than it is replenished — hence the tightness and flaking.

02What really hydrates

The combination of humectants + occlusives works. Humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea, panthenol) draw in moisture; occlusives (petrolatum, mineral oil, dimethicone, ceramides) seal it in. The key point — apply within 3 minutes of the shower on damp skin. A cream and ointment are more effective than a lotion. With severe dryness — a layer of a product with petrolatum over the cream at night.

03The order and habits

The routine is simple: a warm shower 5–10 minutes → pat with a towel → cream on damp skin right away. During the day, if needed — again on the driest areas. In winter keep the room humidity around 45–60% (a humidifier). Wear loose clothing of breathable fabrics — tight clothes and wool irritate dry skin. Avoid products with alcohol, AHA concentrates and fragrance during the barrier-restoration period.

  • A hot shower and a harsh flannel. The main accelerator of dryness and itching.
  • "Drinking more water" instead of care. Hydration is useful, but skin dryness is not treated this way.
  • A lotion instead of a cream with severe dryness. There is not enough occlusion — moisture leaves.
  • Fragrance and alcohol in products. Common irritants of damaged skin.
  • Ignoring itching and cracks. Scratching leads to infection and thickening of the skin.

05Common questions

Does drinking more water help with dry skin?

Adequate hydration is useful for health, but body dryness is not resolved this way — it is about the barrier and holding moisture. Care and shower habits decide.

Oil instead of cream — does it work?

Oils and butters often "spread" on the skin and hold less moisture than a cream or ointment. Better a cream/ointment; oil as an addition, not a replacement.

When to see a dermatologist?

If after 2 weeks of care the dryness does not improve, there is strong itching, cracks, redness or a rash — it may be atopic dermatitis, psoriasis or another condition.

This material is educational and does not replace a consultation with a dermatologist. Persistent dryness with itching and cracks requires examination by a doctor.
