The body is not a smaller copy of the face. Here the skin is thicker but often drier: the shins and forearms have few sebaceous glands, so they feel tight and flake first. The good news — the body does not need a heap of jars. A simple minimum works: do not over-dry in the shower, hydrate on damp skin and protect exposed areas from the sun.
The base of body care: a short warm (not hot) shower, a gentle fragrance-free cleansing gel, hydration within 3 minutes of the shower on damp skin (a cream/ointment is more effective than a lotion), and sunscreen on exposed areas. Common concerns — dryness, "chicken skin" (KP) and body acne — are addressed specifically over this base. Everything else is optional.
01How the skin of the body differs from the face
The skin of the body is thicker and more resilient than the face, but on many areas (shins, forearms, lower back) it has fewer sebaceous glands — hence the dryness and tightness, especially in winter and with age (xerosis is more common after 50). At the same time the back and chest, on the contrary, are rich in glands — that is where acne can occur. The conclusion: the body needs not a "universal" approach but different care by area.
02A shower that does not dry
The main source of body dryness is the shower itself. Dermatologists advise: 5–10 minutes, warm, not hot, water, a gentle cleansing gel (apply where it is really needed — underarms, groin — rather than rubbing the whole body), pat the skin with a towel, do not rub. Harsh flannels and scrubs every day are not needed — they disturb the barrier. Shaving — at the end of the shower, on damp skin.
03Hydration: the main rule
A moisturiser seals the moisture that is already in the skin, so it needs applying within 3 minutes of the shower, while the skin is damp. A cream and ointment hold moisture better than a lotion; with very dry skin, a layer of a product with petrolatum over the cream will do. Look for: ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea, panthenol. For the body, choose fragrance-free — fragrance is a common irritant.
- A hot, long shower. Washes off lipids and sets off dryness and itching.
- Applying cream to dry skin an hour later. The moment is missed — there is nothing to seal.
- Rubbing the body with a harsh flannel daily. Disturbs the barrier, increases irritation.
- Ignoring sunscreen on the body. Arms, shoulders, décolleté and shins age and burn too.
- "Unscented" instead of "fragrance-free". Unscented can contain a masking fragrance that irritates.

05Common questions
Does the body need as complex a routine as the face?
No. The base (gentle cleansing + hydration on damp skin + sunscreen on the exposed) is enough for most. Actives are added specifically for a particular concern — dryness, KP, acne.
Lotion or cream?
A cream and ointment hold moisture better than a lotion, especially with dry skin. A lotion suits normal skin and light summer hydration.
When is body dryness a reason to see a doctor?
If it does not pass after a couple of weeks of care, there is strong itching, cracks, redness — it may be atopic dermatitis, psoriasis or another condition; it is worth seeing a dermatologist.
