Antioxidants: Protection, Not Repair

Antioxidants (vitamin C, E, ferulic acid) neutralise the free radicals from UV — that is, they work on prevention rather than "fixing" wrinkles. Their main strength is synergy with sunscreen. Let us take a look.

K·Beauty Guide Editorial

Antioxidants are often presented as "rejuvenating". It is more accurate to put it differently: they protect rather than repair. Their job is to quench the free radicals from the sun before they damage the skin. So their main role is prevention and teamwork with sunscreen.

Коротко

Antioxidants (vitamin C, E, ferulic acid) neutralise the free radicals that form under UV and break down collagen. This is prevention of damage, not the removal of wrinkles. Their main strength is synergy with sunscreen: together they protect the skin better than either does alone.

01What antioxidants do

Under UV, free radicals (ROS) form in the skin — unstable molecules that damage cells and set off the breakdown of collagen. Antioxidants intercept and neutralise them. That is, they do not "reverse" ageing but keep damage from accumulating — this is preventive work.

02The main antioxidants

  • Vitamin C — the most powerful in the skin; antioxidant + even tone + collagen: vitamin C.
  • Vitamin E — works in tandem with vitamin C, stabilising it.
  • Ferulic acid — strengthens and stabilises the C + E pairing.
  • Niacinamide — antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties: niacinamide.

03Prevention, not treatment — and synergy with sunscreen

Antioxidants do not replace sunscreen and do not remove existing wrinkles. Their strength is in the pairing: an antioxidant applied in the morning strengthens the sunscreen's photoprotection by intercepting the radicals that UV still sets off. So the classic anti-ageing morning is antioxidant + sunscreen: why sunscreen is needed.

04Common questions

Do antioxidants remove wrinkles?

No. They protect the skin from new damage, but they do not "fix" wrinkles that already exist. That takes retinoids and time, while antioxidants are prevention.

Does an antioxidant replace sunscreen?

No. It strengthens photoprotection, but it does not filter UV. It works only alongside sunscreen, not instead of it.
