The skin around the eyes is thinner than on the rest of the face (about 0.5 mm against 2 mm on the cheeks), so it reacts faster and calls for gentler formulas. Eye creams and serums are close relatives — the difference is texture — and they are chosen for the concern: puffiness, dark circles, fine lines or dryness. We have gathered popular products (creams and serums together) and arranged them by concern, mixing Korean and Western. Apply them with the ring finger, pressing gently — without rubbing or stretching.
In brief, by concern: puffiness — caffeine: The Ordinary Caffeine 5%. Dark circles — niacinamide, retinal, vitamin C: Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Serum. Fine lines and anti-ageing — retinal and peptides: COSRX Snail Peptide Eye Cream or The Ordinary Multi-Peptide. Dryness — ceramides and hyaluronic acid: CeraVe Eye Repair. One thing matters: dark circles come in three types (vascular, pigmented, and shadow from a hollow) — the type decides what will help.
01First — which concern and which type of circles
There can be several problems under the eyes, and they are solved differently. Puffiness responds well to caffeine (which constricts the vessels). Dark circles — there are three types: vascular (bluish; caffeine and strengthening the capillaries help), pigmented (brownish; niacinamide, vitamin C, arbutin help), structural (a shadow from a hollow; peptides and retinal, which build up volume, help). Fine lines — retinal and peptides. Dryness — ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Korean products often combine several actives at once.
02Dark circles
Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Serum (serum, Korean). One of the most popular eye serums: ginseng, retinal and niacinamide work on both pigmented and structural circles (through renewal and firmness). Light, quick to absorb, and a little goes a long way. For dark circles and the first fine lines; sensitive skin should introduce it carefully (retinal), with sunscreen by day.
The Ordinary Caffeine 5% + EGCG (serum, Western, budget-friendly). A watery serum with 5% caffeine and the antioxidant EGCG — it noticeably reduces puffiness (sometimes within a couple of days) and slightly brightens vascular circles. For puffiness and vascular dark circles; on pigmented ones it works less well. Very affordable, and one to keep in the fridge (for the cooling effect).
03Fine lines and anti-ageing
COSRX Advanced Snail Peptide Eye Cream (cream, Korean). A rich but quickly absorbing cream with ~72% snail mucin, five peptides, niacinamide and adenosine — it hydrates, firms and works on fine lines. Versatile: light for the day, nourishing for the night. Good for dark circles alongside dryness and the first signs of ageing.
The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Eye Serum (serum, Western). A concentrate of several peptide complexes with niacinamide — it works on fine lines, puffiness and dark circles at once, a gentle alternative to retinol. It suits sensitive skin too. Do not combine it with direct acids or vitamin C in one layer.
Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream (cream, Korean). A mild option built on bakuchiol (a plant-based alternative to retinol — it does not increase light sensitivity and is more easily tolerated) with fermented black rice, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. A milky, light texture that absorbs without stickiness, tested for sensitive skin. For gentle anti-ageing care and hydration, and suited to anyone whom retinol does not suit. From our editorial team's own experience: it hydrates well and sits beautifully under make-up; it works no dramatic miracles, but it is very pleasant to use.
04Hydration and dryness
CeraVe Eye Repair Cream (cream, Western). A creamy treatment with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide — it hydrates, strengthens the barrier of the thin skin and brightens gently. Fragrance-free, ophthalmologist-tested. For dry and sensitive skin around the eyes; the de-puffing is weaker than with the caffeine ones.
Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Eye Cream (cream, Korean). A light gel-cream with hyaluronic acid of various molecular weights and caffeine — it hydrates, plumps the thin skin and reduces puffiness. A refreshing texture that absorbs in seconds and sits well under make-up. Convenient in the morning and for normal and combination skin.
05Under-eye patches: do you need them
Hydrogel patches are a pleasant ritual, but not a substitute for a routine. In 15–20 minutes actives penetrate only to a limited degree, so you should not expect a pronounced, lasting effect from patches — their strength lies elsewhere: quickly refreshing and slightly reducing puffiness in the morning, especially when kept in the fridge (cooling helps with puffiness). For real work on circles and fine lines you need the creams and serums from the sections above; patches are a pleasant addition for an occasion or a brisk morning.
Abib Collagen Eye Patch Jericho Rose (an example). Jelly-like patches with collagen for a morning refresh. They cool and smooth briefly, and are handy before make-up. One caveat: if the gel has not fully absorbed, the patch can slip. From our editorial team's own experience: the patches do not seem to have a noticeable effect, but as a morning refresh (especially from the fridge) they are pleasant.
- Expecting one product to remove any kind of circle. Vascular, pigmented and structural circles call for different actives — identify the type first.
- Rubbing and stretching the skin. Apply gently, pressing with the ring finger along the orbital bone — rubbing deepens fine lines.
- Applying an eye retinal without sunscreen. Retinal increases light sensitivity; sun protection by day is essential.
- Expecting results in a week. Puffiness goes quickly, but pigmented and structural circles take six to twelve weeks of consistent use.

07Common questions
How does an eye cream differ from a serum?
Mainly in texture. Serums are lighter, absorb faster and more often carry targeted actives (caffeine, peptides) — convenient in the morning and under make-up. Creams are richer and more nourishing — better for dryness and at night. A concern can be addressed with either.
Do I even need a separate eye product?
Not always. If there are no pronounced concerns under the eyes, the same moisturiser you use for the face is often enough. A separate product is justified for puffiness, dark circles or fine lines, where a targeted active is needed.
What actually helps with dark circles?
It depends on the type. Vascular (bluish) — caffeine. Pigmented (brownish) — niacinamide, vitamin C, arbutin and, above all, sunscreen. Structural (a shadow from a hollow) — peptides and retinal. Circles are often mixed, which is why Korean products combine actives.
