Sunscreen for the Body: How Much to Apply and What Is Most Often Missed

The body burns and ages from the sun no less than the face, but sunscreen is applied to it "by eye" and the ears, feet and neck are forgotten. A look at how much product the body needs, how often to reapply and what is more convenient for covering large areas.

K·Beauty Guide Editorial

Everyone remembers sunscreen for the face, but they cover the body "as best they can". Yet the arms, shoulders, décolleté and shins burn and age from UV just the same, and it is on the body that missed, burned patches most often appear. Let us work out the practice: how much to apply, what not to forget and how to conveniently cover large areas.

Коротко

For the body choose broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and apply generously: for the whole body an adult needs about 30 ml (a shot glass). Apply 15 minutes before heading out, reapply every 2 hours and after swimming/sweating. Common "blind spots": the ears, back of the neck, feet, hands, the décolleté area. Convenient for covering large areas are sprays and stick formats, but rub them in anyway. UPF clothing and shade are the best protection.

01Why the body needs sunscreen

Ultraviolet is the main external factor in skin ageing and a key risk factor for skin cancer, and it acts on any exposed skin, not just the face. On the body, especially vulnerable are the shoulders, back, décolleté, backs of the hands and shins. Sun protection is useful at any age: it reduces the risk of new pigmentation spots, helps the skin stay firmer and lowers the risk of cancer. It works not only in winter/summer — UV is present all year round.

02How much to apply

The main mistake is too thin a layer. For the whole body an adult needs about 30 ml of product (a full shot glass). Apply 15 minutes before heading out, so the film has time to form, and reapply every 2 hours, as well as right after swimming, towelling off or heavy sweating. "Water-resistant" does not mean "forever" — it is only a set time in water, after which you need to apply again.

03Formats and blind spots

For large areas, sprays and sticks are convenient, but they still need to be rubbed in — a spray often goes on unevenly. Do not forget the ears, the back of the neck, feet, hands and the parting — these are missed most often. The most reliable protection is not only cream: UPF clothing, shade and a hat. Sunscreen complements them, it does not replace them, especially on the beach and in the mountains.

  • A thin "token" layer. Under-applying cuts the real SPF several times over.
  • Not reapplying after swimming. Even water-resistant washes off and rubs off with a towel.
  • Forgetting the ears, feet and back of the neck. Classic burned "blind spots".
  • A spray without rubbing in. Goes on in patches — unprotected areas remain.
  • Sunscreen only on holiday. UV acts all year round, in the city too.

05Common questions

How much sunscreen do I really need for the body?

A guide — about 30 ml (a full shot glass) for the whole body of an adult, in a generous even layer. A thin layer sharply reduces the actual protection.

Is it essential to reapply every 2 hours?

Yes, when out in the sun — and additionally right after swimming, towelling off or heavy sweating. Otherwise the protection drops.

Is clothing enough instead of cream?

Dense UPF clothing and shade are excellent protection, often more reliable than cream. Sunscreen is applied to the areas the clothing does not cover.
